Features

Everything below is yours for free. Yes, all of it — no feature is hiding behind a paywall. Larger organizations get an Enterprise licence made for them, but it is the same great software, not extra buttons.

Targets and distribution lists

Register a connection once — SQL Server today, with the engine written against System.Data.Common so other providers slot in. Group connections into named distribution lists and run against the list rather than picking servers by hand each time.

Pre-flight, before anything connects

Scripts are split into batches, variables substituted, and the whole plan validated before a single connection opens. A refusal at pre-flight means the estate was never touched, and the CLI reports that distinctly from a mid-run failure so a retry can be decided safely.

On-error policies

Chosen per script from its row in the Project Explorer, resolved once at plan time: stop the batch, stop the target, skip the target, continue — or let the script decide. Failures report batch, line and database, and the editor navigates to the offending line.

Variables and environments

The workspace declares variables; an environment supplies their values. A {{token}} therefore means the same variable in every script, and what changes between runs is which environment is selected.

Formatter

A T-SQL formatter with a layout engine that keeps your conventions rather than imposing its own, available on the editor and from the command line.

Command line and MCP

sqlmc exposes the same operations the desktop app uses, with a versioned JSON envelope, NDJSON run events and a stable exit-code table. sqlmc mcp serves the same code over the Model Context Protocol, so a coding agent gets the guardrails too.

Automation is included free, because the best tools are the ones you can script without a second thought.
